Veneers
Improve Your Smile With This Quick, Easy Option
Remedies a Variety of Teeth Issues
Dental veneers are very thin tooth covers that are secured over the visible (front) part of the tooth and are designed to look like your natural teeth. If you want to improve the look of your smile, they are a quick and easy option.
These veneers can be utilized to remedy several dental issues, including:
- Teeth that are stained and don’t respond to whitening;
- Worn or chipped teeth;
- Misshapen or crooked teeth;
- A large gap or uneven spaces between the upper front teeth.
Types of Veneers and Their Benefits
Porcelain Veneers: This type of veneer is a thin shell that is custom-made to fit on the tooth.
Some benefits include:
- Durable and long-lasting;
- Natural-looking;
- Don’t stain easily;
- Less tooth enamel needs to be removed than with a cap or crown.
Composite Resin Veneers: This type of veneer is created from a tooth-colored material that is bonded to the tooth.
Some benefits include:
- Less tooth enamel needs to be removed than with porcelain veneers or crowns;
- Fewer visits to the dentist required;
- Cost less than the porcelain type;
- Easy to fix if they get damaged.
Your gums and teeth must be healthy before you can get veneers, so any decay or disease must be addressed before you can proceed with veneers. They are not always a feasible option for patients who grind or clench their teeth, because in some cases they can break or chip. In this case, your dentist may recommend that you wear a dental night guard while you are sleeping.
Even though your dentist will remove as little tooth enamel as possible for placement of the veneers, the process cannot be undone after the enamel has been removed.
Maintaining Your Veneers
- Veneers can break or chip under pressure, so avoid chewing on hard objects, such as ice or pencils and biting your fingernails.
- It can take a few days for you to get used to how your veneers feel. Be sure to let your dentist know if your bite does not feel quite right after the procedure.
- Keep your gums and teeth clean by brushing and flossing every day, because you can still get cavities around or under the veneers.
As with all your dental care, discuss all your expectations and treatment alternatives with your dentist. Regular visits to the dentist are needed to keep your gums and teeth healthy.
