Our Burlington doctors are here to ease your concerns.
Non-surgical fat reduction treatments offered at body contouring clinics, such as the EMSculpt procedure, have been wildly growing in popularity due to the incredible results they can achieve.
Seriously – who wouldn’t want to noticeably tone, strengthen and firm up their physique with no effort required? These treatments that are comparable to non-surgical tummy tucks are seriously capable of achieving results that only a diligent workout routine and dietary changes over months could do!
However, a common question that arises about treatments like EMSculpt is whether or not they’re completely safe and healthy to undergo.
For example, one question from a concerned patient asks whether electromagnetic energy can cause cancer. When in fact, the National Cancer Institute provides an article explaining the difference between safe vs. dangerous electromagnetic energy – and good news: the low-frequency levels of electromagnetic energy used in EMSculpt are absolutely safe.
The article states that “These [Electromagnetic Fields] are in the non-ionizing radiation part of the electromagnetic spectrum and are not known to damage DNA or cells directly.” As with EMSculpt, the electromagnetic waves gently work to stimulate skeletal muscle motor nerves with no damage caused to tissues or cells.
Furthermore, EMSculpt is FDA-approved.
And since it is an entirely non-invasive procedure, this also means that it requires no downtime along with very little risk of potential side effects. In fact, the most common side effect with non invasive body sculpting procedures like EMSculpt is simply the sensation of muscle soreness after treatment – comparable to that of soreness experienced the day after a vigorous workout – and that only means that the treatment is working its magic!
Ok, so it’s safe – but is it safe for everyone?
It’s important to note that not everyone is a great candidate for the EMSclupt procedure. Because the machine uses High Intensity Focused Electro Magnetic (HIFEM) technology to activate and stimulate powerful muscle contractions, those with any implanted medical devices or metal pieces such as pacemakers, for example, should not undergo this procedure.
Additionally, any pregnant patients, or patients who have an IUD (intrauterine device) composed of metal, should also refrain from EMSculpt treatment.
Besides that, this non-invasive body sculpting procedure offered at our Burlington clinic is certainly safe for just about anyone provided they don’t fit any of the criteria above!
How does a non-invasive body sculpting procedure like EMSculpt compare to a surgical fat reduction procedure like liposuction?
Liposuction surgery is generally recommended for individuals who want to get rid of excess fat from a larger area of the body, as it can get rid of around 10 times the amount of fat vs. a non-invasive procedure.
So, minimally invasive or non-invasive body sculpting procedures like EMSculpt that don’t require patients to go under the knife are ideal for those with goals to have stubborn fat removed from a smaller, more targeted area – and the added benefit of muscle growth and tone is just the cherry on top. (Of course, combined with the zero downtime or extensive healing necessary!)
Furthermore, unlike with a surgical procedure like liposuction, a single EMSculpt treatment session will typically take no longer than a quick and painless 30 minutes – making it especially convenient for individuals with demanding schedules.
The different types of safe, non-invasive weight loss procedures and how they work
There are a variety of different non-surgical fat loss treatments available on the market today, each employing a different technology to target and destroy fat. These treatment types include:
High Intensity Focused Electro Magnetic (HIFEM) energy treatments: EMSculpt uses something called HIFEM energy to trigger and activate powerful muscle (supramaximal) contractions that simply can’t be achieved through voluntary or manual muscle action. It’s through this technology that both fat cells are targeted for elimination, while the muscle is also stimulated to lead to noticeable growth/tone and a truly transformative result. These treatments are ideal for targeted areas of fat such as in the abdomen, thighs, arms, calves and/or buttocks.
Cold treatments: These types of treatments use temperatures cold enough to kill fat cells without damaging the skin. The device will pull portions of skin in via suction, then cooling it in order to destroy the underlying fat over a set amount of time. These types of procedures can be used to eliminate fat from many treatment areas such as the chin, arms, abdomen, thighs, and love handles.
Heat treatments: These devices use laser energy to damage the structure of fat cells, leading to dead fat cells that the body will then eliminate on its own. Heat treatments employ devices that use flat applicators, making them not as ideal for areas of the body containing any curves. With that being said, heat treatments work best when used to reduce fat from the stomach and/or thighs.
Ultrasound energy treatments: As the most time-intensive method of the four types, ultrasound energy is a type of treatment that utilizes ultrasound energy to break down fat. The duration of such treatments is roughly one hour per session. These treatments do not involve any hooking up to machines, as the technician or doctor will use the device by moving it around manually. Ultrasound energy devices use mechanical vibrations to comfortably break down and eliminate fat and is strictly for use on the abdomen.
Radiofrequency energy treatments: A type of procedure with no downtime required, radiofrequency energy devices administer energy to produce heat and destroy fat cells. In fact, they target the water in these cells, so it’s important for patients to ensure that they’re well-hydrated prior to their procedure – as the treatment will not be as effective if the body is dehydrated. It is common to feel a warm sensation during this radio frequency energy procedure.
