Implant Supported Bridge
A Robust Solution for Replacing Missing Teeth
Comfortable and Secure
An implant-supported bridge is much like a regular dental bridge, but instead of being supported by natural teeth, it is held in place by an implant. In most cases, when this type of replacement is used, one implant is inserted into the jawbone for each of the missing teeth, and the crowns are then connected together to form a single piece.
When Are Implant-Supported Bridges Used?
They are used when the patient has more than one missing teeth. In some cases, it’s used when there is a concern that too much pressure would be placed on individual implants that are not connected.
If the implants are to be inserted next to natural teeth, those teeth and the surrounding gums must be healthy. If there isn’t enough bone to place and support the implants, the supporting bone can be fortified using grafting or bone augmentation prior to the procedure.
How Do Implant-Supported Bridges Work?
There are three parts to an implant-supported bridge.
- Implant: This is created using titanium and it is surgically inserted into the jawbone. There is typically one implant for each missing tooth.
- Abutment: This is a cylinder that is made of titanium, porcelain, or gold, that is screwed onto the implant. Today, all abutments – which can be custom-made or prefabricated – are held in place with screws.
- Restoration:This is the part that looks like natural teeth. It is a series of crowns that are connected together to form a bridge and are constructed of porcelain that is fused to a substructure of metal.
4 Benefits Of Implant-Supported Bridges
- Cosmetic Enhancements: Any kind of dental bridge can greatly improve the appearance of your smile after tooth loss. And because today’s bridges are made of materials that closely resemble natural teeth, they have the same translucence qualities as enamel.
- Restore Function: Replacing your missing teeth with dental bridges can also restore function, allowing you to speak and eat normally.
- Maintain Structure of Your Natural Teeth: As compared to traditional bridges, implant-supported bridges offer several advantages. Because they don’t have to depend on the surrounding teeth to support them, no modification to the structure of your natural teeth is required.
The teeth that are adjacent to the bridge will also remain healthy and whole, and not be exposed to the pressure of supporting a bridge, which can gradually damage and wear down the teeth with the crown.
Improve Oral Health and Prevent Future Bone Loss: After teeth fall out or are removed, the underlying bone structure can start to deteriorate because it no longer receives stimulation from the roots of the tooth.
Fortunately, dental implants supply this stimulus to the jawbone to replace the natural tooth’s roots. These bridges will also prevent future bone loss and the loosening of surrounding teeth.
Your implant-supported bridge will feel more comfortable and secure than a partial denture, which rests on top of the gums and is removable. It will look just like the natural teeth it is replacing and allow you to eat and speak normally.
